"GENKI" English education homepage by T. Suzuki
students page (PALS English Class)

Hi! We are students at PALS. Nice to see you.

Hello, everyone!
My name is Sho Takahashi.
I go to Honjo High School.

I am learning English at PALS Class.
I listen to two short stories every week.
I am not allowed to see the texts.
I answer questions about the stories in English.
Then I choose one story and type out all the words in the story.
The work is called "dictation method" according to Mr. Suzuki.
The other day my English test was very good!

Mr. Masugi keeps a diary in English every day. He is quite an energetic and "genki" person. I can't believe he is older than I. I've never seen him sick for the past several years. In fact he hasn't even caught a cold...! (Takeshi Suzuki)

My Self-Introduction (Masugi Koichi)

My name is Masugi Koichi. I retired from a school-headmaster's job in 1996 and live on my pension in Honjo City. Now I work at Children's Nursery Club near my house twice a week. For the rest of the time, I enjoy doing many things for myself with much interest quite actively.

Fortunately I am blessed with good health and my family has understood my energy and curiosity. I am enjoying my life to the full. Hopefully I will be able to continue to live such a life for the rest of my life.

I enjoy playing soft tennis a few times a week with my club members. I drip with sweat while playing tennis. I always feel refreshed. I love skiing, too. It satisfies my sense of thrill and speed when I ski on a snow ground.

Next I enjoy scuba diving. I go on a trip to dive at various domestic, overseas spots several times a year. Looking at beautiful scenes or marine's life at the beach with my own eyes usually leaves me with deep impressions of them. While diving, I occasionally enjoy new discovery. It is fascinating to appreciate the nature. No wonder they say the sea is the mother of nature.

I often go picking up wild plants around hills in my neighborhood. I am dead tired after walking along steep paths and bushes. But the hard effort offers me various wild plants in return. My family members are all pleased to see them because they are very delicious.

Then I like bathing at a spa. I go bathing in a public bath every day. It heals my body and refreshes my mind.

I belong to Honjo Reading Club. We get together twice a month and discuss many things about books. Each member reads a given book and brings his/her impressions and opinions about it for discussion at the meetings. I like reading very much because it gives us a lot of new information and inspiration. It's like giving food to my mental and intellectual curiosity.

Lastly I am greatly interested in learning English. I wish to develop my ability and knowledge of English more. It is a lot of fun to concentrate myself on learning English.

I Hi! My name is Ken Kato.
I belong to the boat club at High School.

The number of boat clubs is rather limited
compared to the other clubs as extracurricular activities at high schools.
Regatta or boat racing, however, is very popular all over the world.
Many love the sport. We have regatta competitions in the Olympic Games.

You have to make your boat move very, very fast. You have to use your whole energy.
In fact you make it go a distance of 1,000 meters in about 3 minutes.
The average time for high school students is 3 minutes
or 3minutes 30 seconds depending on the conditions.

An important thing about the regatta competition is
that the members of a team have to synchronize their body movements,
making their concerted efforts and energies to win a race.
In other words it is a sport which emphasizes on simplicity - ultimate SIMPLICITY.

Hi! My name is Keigo. Keigo Matsuo.
I have been learning English and its culture at PALS English Class since 1995.
6 years ago I was a freshman of Honjo High School.
English has been my favorite subject.

At PALS I've been watching ABC News
"World News Tonight with Peter Jennings" for 6 years.
PALS picks up an interesting piece from the program every week.
Now I can comprehend most of
what the ABC news reporters are saying in the program.
Later I can read the transcript at home.
Then I understand the news more in detail and more clearly.

I think Sidney Sheldon's stories are interesting.
First at PALS class I read his novel,
"CHASE" through a dictation method.
We are not allowed to look at the text at PALS.
It is a method, which, Mr. Suzuki believes, is quite effective
for us learners to develop our listening comprehension.

After "CHASE" I am now (reading) listening to
"Master of the Game" narrated by Orson Wells.
(His speaking is almost at natural speed.)
My listening comprehension is pretty good now.
I can understand the story just by listening to the tape only once

Mr. Suzuki says that my English reading
(pronunciation, intonation, rhythm)
is better and more natural than his.

My problem is speaking and writing skills.
I have to practice how to express myself more.

I will write something and put it here soon. See you.

(BE GENKI)  by Yukari Hori

Good afternoon (morning), everyone. How are you doing? Are you GENKI? GENKI is a Japanese word to express you are in good spirits. The word is often used for greeting in our daily conversation. Everyone knows what GENKI means. But, have you thought about the expression a little more deeply? What does GENKI mean to you?

Recently an American friend asked me what GENKI means. After thinking about it for some time, I answered it means that you are "akarui" or cheerful and healthy. We Japanese use the expression like this. We say to our friends, "GENKI?", which means "How are you doing?"

While I was explaining, I became more interested in the word GENKI myself. That's why I decided to find out more about the word in dictionaries. Here is what I've found out. It is used as a noun or an adjective and has many meanings. In English, it means, well-being, health, vigor, vitality, stamina, energy, soundness, liveliness, cheerfulness, enthusiasm, happiness, etc, etc.

For the summary GENKI means that someone is at the state of physical, mental and spiritual well being. First you must be in good health physically to enjoy life. Mentally you must be enthusiastic to be active in life. It is the source of power that produces and grows all good things. Someone also told me that GENKI would be added into an English dictionary within a few years because no English words can describe it. People all over the world may start using GENKI soon. Isn't it a wonderful thing?

Then I started to think what makes me feel GENKI. First my family or friends. I love them and enjoy talking to them. Especially when I am down, sad, angry, they listen to me carefully and sometimes give me good advice. Then my GENKI comes back.

Secondly I must talk about music. People speak different languages in the world. You can't communicate unless you know the language. But music is different. It's a common language to all the peoples of the world. You don't need anything to understand how good some music is. You just listen to music with your heart. It's OK if you love classical music or pop music or any other music. If you love the music and if it gives you GENKI, it's your music. A good example may be a famous Japanese pop song, "Ringo no Uta" or "The Apple Song". The song was popular after the World War Two. Many Japanese were sad and unhappy at that time. They were having a hard and difficult time. "Ringo no Uta" gave many of them a lot of GENKI.

Finally I like nature just like many of you. I love to look up at the stars in the night sky. Take a moon for example. The shape of the moon changes every night. It's so much fun. Besides it's the same moon as our ancestors all over the world enjoyed looking at. All those people in Asia, Europe, Africa, North and South America who lived hundreds of years ago, thousands of years ago, or even millions of years ago. They were enjoying the same moon. Isn't it exciting? What nature gives you GENKI? Some of you may like a sunrise or sunset. Some of you may prefer mountains, rivers or sea. Some of you may prefer animals or plants. Yes, nature gives us a lot of GENKI, doesn't it?

Are you GENKI? What does GENKI mean to you? What gives you GENKI? Thank you.
